Taos – An Art Colony

Albuquerque – The Duke City

As the largest city in the state, Albuquerque boasts a number of incredible cultural and historical landmarks. Start your exploration with a visit to Old Town Albuquerque, the original city center and home to the University of New Mexico campus. Stroll through the Plaza Mayor, which was once the town square, or take a tour of the San Felipe de Neri Church, a Spanish Colonial-era church that still stands today.
Albuquerque also offers plenty of outdoor fun and entertainment. Climb to the top of Sandia Peak and enjoy breathtaking views of the Rio Grande Valley or explore Petroglyph National Monument, which houses more than 20,000 ancient rock carvings. The ABQ BioPark Zoo is also a great place to spend an afternoon with the family.
No trip to Albuquerque would be complete without experiencing some of its amazing food. From traditional Southwestern dishes to modern flavors, the city offers an array of delicious culinary experiences. Try chiles rellenos at El Pinto or sample some flavorful New Mexican street tacos at El Modelo, then finish off the day with a craft beer from one of the many local breweries.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park
A local’s guide to New Mexico wouldn’t be complete without mentioning the magnificent Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Located in the Guadalupe Mountains of southeastern New Mexico, the park is home to over 119 known caves and is an internationally-recognized UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The most famous and accessible of all these caves is the massive Carlsbad Cavern. Stretching for nearly four miles, the cave features stalagmites and stalactites that are millions of years old, and its massive chambers are filled with breathtaking views and dramatic lighting. The main chamber, known as the Big Room, is the largest in the park and is one of the largest cave chambers in North America.
Visitors can explore the caverns either through self-guided tours or with a knowledgeable guide. Guided tours include the Natural Entrance Tour, the King’s Palace Tour, and the Slaughter Canyon Cave Tour. There are also special bat-viewing programs offered in the summer months.
Beyond the Carlsbad Cavern, there are plenty of other caves and features to explore. Visitors can take a guided tour through Lechuguilla Cave, explore Iron Maiden Cave, or check out some of the other more than 100 caves in the park.
If you’re looking for a truly unique experience, consider camping at Carlsbad Caverns National Park. Here you’ll find primitive campsites and RV sites, as well as cabins and cottages for rent. There’s no better way to experience this extraordinary landscape than by sleeping among its towering mountains and mysterious caves!
White Sands National Monument
A local’s guide to New Mexico would not be complete without a visit to White Sands National Monument. Located in the southern part of the state, White Sands is a fascinating landscape made up of gypsum dunes that stretch for miles.
